DUFF MACDONALD is a seasoned performer of the stage, radio, voice overs, animation and television, acting in over 30 musicals and plays across Canada and the USA.
Born in Saskatchewan Canada, Duff is an ultra versatile actor and singer spanning many mediums of the entertainment industry and comes from a very large Scottish family of seven. He originally was headed into singing in the Opera world, after being granted a full scholarship to Dickinson State College in North Dakota. But alas, kept moving and headed to Vancouver to be an ambassador to Saskatchewan and perform in the pavilion production at the 1986 World's Fair, EXPO86.
In 1989, after a few years in Vancouver, he then headed to Toronto and was cast in the Original Canadian Company of Les Miserables (Mirvish/1989). On the First National Tour, he then headed back to the west and studied acting independently with Gastown Actor's Studio, June Whittiker, Linda Darlow and various others back in Vancouver delving into the blooming film industry there appearing on such classic television shows as 21 JUMPSTREET, MACGYVER and NEON RIDER.
During all of this, Duff had been singing and songwriting. He was a finalist in the Nashville Music City Song Festival for his song “Dreamin". Soon after, his first professional recording came on a CD Compilation entitled “Desolation Sound” (1991). He received airplay for his original songs “If I Only Had the Time” and “In the Night” on CBC Radio Canada.
In 1994, Duff was hired by Princess Cruises as a Headline Entertainer and solo Cabaret Artist. He went on to tour the globe starring in over 20 of their lavish production shows for over 12 years working alongside Gene Anthony Ray (Fame), Red Buttons, Jaye Hoyle (Hee-Haw), Peter Matz (Barbra Streisand) and Laurie Miller (Exposé) and many others.
Duff’s 1st solo debut album ROOTS was released in February of 2011 to great success and can now be found streaming online on almost every music site and platform including Youtube, iTunes, Spotify, Emusic, Amazon Mp3, CD Baby, Myspace, Shazam and Bandcamp. He has sold over 1500 hard copies to date and has radio airplay happening all over Canada, The U.S and Europe. Recorded in his at home studio, it was a testament to what artists are achieving these days in the digital music world.
His second album NAKED is currently digitally available online within, Youtube, iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and Amazon as well as many other sites. Material inspired by some major life events like the sudden passing of his parents, his brother and the end of a relationship. Veteran musicians Peter Bleakney (Anne Murray’s bass player of 25 years), Adam Warner (Kevin Quain and the Mad Bastards, Sarah Slean, Royal Wood) and Mark Stewartson (Classic Albums Live) are the backing band on the album. Featuring Duncan Scott on Mandolin/Fiddle, Fred Smith on Banjo/Dobro and Michael Lerner on Keys and Synth. Produced by Duff and Michael Lerner. Featured on the album is a haunting duet of the Celtic traditional song "The Skye Boat Song" with Juno Award nominated singer songwriter Wendy Lands.
His new country single PENNIES, NICKELS & DIMES can be heard on radio stations and streamed on iTunes and Youtube.
A man of many voices, his crazy characters can be heard in the animated kids series CARL THE COLLECTOR (FALL 2024/PBSKids), XAVIER RIDDLE and the SECRET MUSEUM (PBSKids/7 Episodes) and LET'S GO LUNA (PBSKids).
You are also sure to have seen him in film and television roles like the recent LOCKE AND KEY (Netflix), CARTER (CTV Drama Channel), GOOD WITCH, TITANS (Netflix), CLAWS OF THE RED DRAGON, Incorporated (SyFy), Cinderella Man, Foolproof, The Music Man (Disney) and in the nation-wide commercials for NUTRAFOL (US National), DESJARDINS, LUCKY MOBILE, AMERICAN EXPRESS/AEROPLAN and BOSTON PIZZA (as the gold Professional Sports Trophy Model)
